146 – Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)

Paul Newman's off to clown college

Paul Newman’s off to clown college

Here’s the second film in a row that started out black and white and after ten minutes changed to colour.I was a bit worried that it would stay with that old style sepia-like look because it was a little hard to watch. But when if switched it made the film 5 times better. The casting of Paul Newman and Robert Redford as the two leads is perfect and Newmans one liners and comedic timing is spot on.BCATSK is about two bank robbers who are being tracked by an elite hit squad hired by a man who has lost loads of money to them via bank and train robberies. They chased throughout america and decide to flee to Bolivia. There they resume there bank robberies and are soon being chased by the Bolivian police. When they decide to go straight that’s when things go tits up and they’re forced to get back into robberies. It did have a few montages in it,some were too long.

John Wayne again. This guy gets around. This film’s in black and white but I’d bet you a fiver he’s wearing the same red shirt from the other two films off this list. This western is a little more bearable because JW isn’t the main character,it’s James Stewart.I don’t mind Stewart as an actor, there’s something about his accent and that southern drawl.Well about the film;it’s starts out GREAT,what with Wayne being dead and stuck in a box, then Stewart tells the tale of (see film title) in the style of one long flash back.Stewart is a lawyer and brings law and order to a small town out west that seems to be over run with highway men and the like. Not the worst western.

Graham Norton as a big gay cowboy.

Great film. This is how westerns should be done. The film revolves around two rival family/gangs that live at opposite ends of a town that’s about the size of a basketball court. How they’ve managed to live this long without all killing each other is a mystery.Eastwoods character turns up and sets up the two gangs just to wipe them out of it and make off with the cash. Some deadly camera work, the extreme close-ups make this film.

I’m only a few films in and already I’ve hit another western. This one’s got Bruce Wayne’s (John Wayne) hardy brother in it too.He must have made this film right after the last one as he seems to be wearing the same clothes. The story is about some injuns who kidnap some girls and there’s these two guys trying to track them down and bring them back.It spans over 5 years but it could be over a week with the way it’s played out.One good character in the film is Moses.Brings a bit of humour to the thing. This western is shorter than the other one which makes it a bit more watch-able and the fact that its filmed on location against some spectacular scenery is a plus too.
