38 – Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)

This guy is super animated. He reminded me of the Bridges in Airplane.

Peter Sellers stars in this Kubrick classic. There wasn’t any credits after the film so i’m not sure how many characters he played but there’s at least 2.The film is about a military sergeant who’s a bit nuts,he has conspiracy theory’s about fluoride in the water and has a gattling gun hidden in his golf bag in his office, who single handily launches a nuclear war against the Russians. He issues a code which activates some 30-40 B-52’s directive of attacking Russian and dropping bombs all over the place. The president tries to stop it but doesn’t know the 3 digit cancellation code.It sounds like serious stuff right? But as the film goes on you realize that this is a dark humor, the film gets more and more daft as it nears its climax and i have to hand it to sellers he has his moments.I don’t think I’ve seen a comedy directed by Kubrick so far and it’s not all that bad,it just takes a little while to get into it.

61 – A Clockwork Orange (1971)

I was looking at some grafitti in the background and i think i spotted a Predator reference.

A Clockwork Orange was banned for some 20+ years in Ireland. When it was un-banned about 10 years ago was when i first saw it.They were selling DVDs cheap in Tower Records and i think my brother bought one. It’s another Kubrick film adapted from an Anthony Burgess novel of the same name.I have to say i don’t really like A Clockwork Orange the film.I dislike films with rapes and stuff like that in them,it makes me lose my faith in humanity for some reason.I read the book before the film and enjoyed it.I heard that Burgess had about 4 books he was trying to peddle to publishers but none were biting. Then one picked up on ACO and he made it big.He then slowly published his other novels as ‘new material’ he had just written. All the while they were just sitting in his desk in his house.Sly.After watching the film i knew it wasn’t for me,that’s not to say it’s not a good film. There’s a few good digs at the prison system and how they don’t want to spend money rehabilitating prisoners but are looking for the quick fix where they can save money, who cares if it’s not tried and tested. There are some interesting scenes and the sound track is totes-amazeballs.About 2 months after watching the film i went out and bought the Soundtrack. The film has an alternative ending to the novel. Also with the conditioning Alex gets did all the doctors not think what would happen if he had to defend himself?Or if someone found out he had the treatment they could exploit his weaknesses?

Wow.Now that was something else.Produced,Directed and Co-Written (screenplay)by Kubrick himself. So he pretty much has creative control on the whole she-bang.Like  Clockwork Orange Kubrick has the film strewn with classical music much to it’s advantage.I’d seen this film maybe 10 years ago and from what i remember i got a bit lost at the end.Same thing happened here, one minute Dave was in one of the orbs heading for Jupiter then it seems like Hal sneaked some mushrooms or mxe into Daves oxygen and things go a bit crazy for a few minutes. It’s a bit of a trip near the end.Kubrick is good at building suspense, some scenes are really tense and in any modern film they would climax with a loud noise and a cat jumping out or something dumb like that. There’s a few 3 minute bits where the screen is just black,at the beginning of the film i thought i was missing a codec on my computer but eventually i got a visual.I went on wikipedia to see if i was missing some integral part of the film, but no i was not. There’s a lot of speculation as to what it all means and went on to say that  he “encouraged people to explore their own interpretations of the film, and refused to offer an explanation of “what really happened” in the movie”.Good man,i think its about the Monolith being a superior being and creating the human race.Heck maybe it took Dave back in time and he was the original ‘man’ hence the foetus floating to earth.Or maybe not.I’ll have to mull it over for a bit.

205 – Barry Lydon (1975)

give me a kiss , boy

give me a kiss , boy

This is a 3 hour long film so make sure you have some popcorn. It chronicles pretty much the whole life of Redmond Barry. He joins the army, deserts that, gets caught, joins another, deserts that. The first part of the film is comical. He spends much of it kissing men.As the film goes on Barry gets the notion that he wants to be a kept man and marries a lord who’s dying/dies wife. She is a good looking woman at first, especially the chair in the bath scene. He’s also a bit of a lady’s man and likes to whore himself about all the while living the high life off her cash.Things go tits up for Barry and he gets his comeuppance. This is a Stanley Kubrick film, the title sequence is not dissimilar from A Clockwork Orange’.
