98 -The Sting (1973)

Is that Flea from The Red Hot Chili Peppers?

Is that Flea from The Red Hot Chili Peppers?

The Sting sees Newman and Redford back again as the two leads after 4 years since Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid. The two really do have some great on screen chemistry and work well off each other. The Sting is set in 1936 and it seems that the national pastime is gambling. There’s two small time grifters who pull a scam on a runner for a syndicate and get found out for it.To get back at them the guy who was ripped off kills Redfords mate.Angered at this he wants to pull a big scam and hit the guy good. This is where Newman fits in.He’s a little older than Redford and has worked some big scams. They devise a plan where they make a fake bookies and Redford convinces the big boss, the same dude who caught the shark in Jaws, that he has an inside scoop and cant lose.Redford agrees with the guy going to do a massive bet and clean the bookies with money fronted by him and they’ll split it 60/40.I’ll leave it at that.

Jesus Christ pose here, bit of symbolism

Jesus Christ pose here, bit of symbolism

Paul Newman has the lead here as the title character of the film.Luke gets busted cutting the tops off parking meters while drunk and gets 2 years on a chain gang.He doesn’t really give a shit about anything, law, opinions or religion. While inside his comrades affection grows for him and he becomes ‘the man’.He tries and succeeds in escaping about 3 times but always they get him back in the end. It’s these feats that get him admiration from all the other inmates. They admire him and think he’s better than him. Then they see him get broke by “the boss” and lose all respect for him.Could they have done what he was forced to do and not get broke? No.So why should it be any different for Luke? They put him on a pedestal but in the end he’s just a man like them.A good film with some quality laughs along the way. Some great camera work and tons of bits and pieces that have been used nowadays. Take for example the bosses glasses,South Park have used this more than once.

Paul Newman's off to clown college

Paul Newman’s off to clown college

Here’s the second film in a row that started out black and white and after ten minutes changed to colour.I was a bit worried that it would stay with that old style sepia-like look because it was a little hard to watch. But when if switched it made the film 5 times better. The casting of Paul Newman and Robert Redford as the two leads is perfect and Newmans one liners and comedic timing is spot on.BCATSK is about two bank robbers who are being tracked by an elite hit squad hired by a man who has lost loads of money to them via bank and train robberies. They chased throughout america and decide to flee to Bolivia. There they resume there bank robberies and are soon being chased by the Bolivian police. When they decide to go straight that’s when things go tits up and they’re forced to get back into robberies. It did have a few montages in it,some were too long.

196 – The Hustler (1961)

pool montage

pool montage

Paul Newman stars as a young pool hustler.Him and an older buck work various pool halls and tables while on the road.Living the good life.Newman wants to play a pro called Fats for big money. But when he’s about $16,000 in the green he get drunk and tired and loses, big style. There’s another side to this film and that’s alcoholism. There maybe even another side,a triangle if you will, about the retardedness of women.Paul love interest is a nut bag,she reminds me of someone. This films not too bad and I’m not a misogynist or anything, quite the opposite, but the portrayal of Piper Lauries character really pissed me off.
