25 – Casablanca (1942)

The blue parrot?More like the grey parrot.

The blue parrot?More like the grey parrot.

One of the most quoted films ever in my opinion. The last 10 minutes more than the rest of the film.Bogart stars as Rick, owner of Ricks American Café.As you probably guessed the film is set in Casablanca in the north of Africa during Germany’s invasion through Europe.Loads of people are trying to leave for America because shits about to hit the fan  and the only way to get to the U.S. is via Lisbon but there’s Nazis everywhere so people have to go to Casablanca to get to Lisbon.Ricks old flame shows up with her husband intending to leave but Rick has acquired their travel documents. That sums up the whole plot. Not much to it.There’s a few good jokes , notably the old couple who get taught English by some guy who can hardly speak it himself. The song ‘as time goes by’ is played about 28 times in the 105 minutes of film.No mean feat I’ll give you that.

27 – Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

A little off the top buddy?

A little off the top buddy?

The Indiana Jones original trilogy are classics.I can’t comment on the Crystal Skull one because it was so unmemorable that i can’t remember it.I think it had aliens in it so that scrapped it for me.Harrison Ford is on form for Raiders of The Lost Ark,the looks and expressions, the one liners and all the other comedic bits are delivered with ease and excellent timing. But i guess that’s all down to the writing too. This is the first film in the set,i prefer the one with Sean Conner y as his dad,was that one the Last Crusade?Anyways this one’s about the Nazi, they all seem to be about Nazis, and their quest to get the Ark of The Covenant. This ark contains the ten commandments. The Nazis believe that it’s a phone that you can call up God and have the craic with him.Who knows maybe it is.Indy thinks differently,he saw a picture in a book that shows it as a big spooky ghost that kills people. When it does get opened it’s more like a direct line to Satan not the other guy.Watching the credits i noticed a Micheal Moore as a unit Director or something to that degree,no wait,a quick google reveals it’s not him.

55 – Paths of Glory (1957)

Mark wahlberg in one of his early films.

Paths of Glory is a World War II court room drama of sorts. After a failed attempt to try and take an enemy position three men are charged with cowardice and are being court marshalled.Kirk Douglas was the top lawyer in France before he was a colonel in the army so he decides to defend the soldiers. The three guys weren’t really cowards but the powers that be want to make examples of them for all the other men who retreated.A lot of them retreated too,the skirmish was a complete failure.Douglas is a realist and believes the men are entitled to a fair trial with proper representation. The court marshal thinks the opposite. They want to get them tried and executed as soon as possible.Try as he might to try and spare them, even with the evidence in his favour,he can’t.The plot is a little similar to A Few Good Men isn’t it?It’s been that long since i seen it that maybe I’m wrong. The film seems a little short,it could maybe have been another 10-15 minutes longer. The final scene in the bar is good. You see all the soldiers whoop whooping and acting like animals but then reality hits them and they realize that they are still in the war and may die at any time.

You wouldn’t away with this now a days. You’d be arrested and signing on the sex offenders list for life.

Life Is Beautiful is a bit of a misleading title for this film. After watching the last last 30 minutes i think a more apt title would be Life Is Shit. I’ve never seen this film before but i bought a copy on DVD for my parents once because it was popular at the time and had gotten a few awards. For anyone who doesn’t know the plot,it’s about a family who gets shipped off to a concentration camp by the Nazis./sounds sad right? The main character, the dad,is called Guido and he is a Jew. His wife is an Italian and they have a young son too that is also shipped off to the camp. The mother pleads to go with her family.Guido is a charming upbeat guy who seems to live in a fantasy, there’s something very whimsical about him.And it’s with his up beat attitude and constant games he’s playing that the whole concentration camp thing doesn’t really effect you on a personal level.Even his final moments i felt distanced from the whole thing. The film came out in 1997 but the whole feel and look of it makes it seem like it’s from the eighties.

The so called socialist party with their hundreds of thousands of spies, and that’s no exaggeration, all spying on each other.Looking for the most minuscule detail to rat out their fellow country men for what? For a corrupt governing body to abuse its power for its own personnel gain.Well let me get into the plot for a bit.A professional interrogator, and spy who is now a lecture-er in an East Germany college teaching new recruits about the skills needed to spot someone in cahoots with the west,is pulled into  help out an old friend investigate on an artist. The artist is a writer and writes plays. But there’s an ulterior motive. The guy is of no interest to the Stazi, however his girlfriend is of interest to some fat fuck.So what does he do?Abuses his power and resources to try and catch out her boyfriend and get him banged up.Thus leaving her free for him. However the guy leading the operation and monitoring has some sort of change of heart.By living his life vicariously through the writer and his girlfriend he finds some sort of common ground or compassion and does his best to conceal their illegal activity. It’s all very out of character for him. When the wall comes down everything changes and the writer tracks down the man who was responsible for monitoring him with info he got via the freedom of information act. It’s a good film.I wasn’t sure what year it was set at during the beginning.I may have blinked and missed a title card. But the clothes and the sets gave nothing away.

liam neeson ?

You see a lot of war films but not so many about P.O.W. camps.Stalag 17 is about a German P.O.W. camp where 600 or so American enlisted men are living.A German mentions that there are 60 men living in this particular barracks but i think I only counted about 20.This film is a comedy, and it does it well.keeping it light and fairly humorous by having a few lovable clowns.Definitely a film for the whole family on a Sunday afternoon.
