20 – City of God (2002)

12mm ? More like the 12 incher.

12mm ? More like the 12 incher.

I’ve seen City of God only once before.Nine and a half years ago i rented it from Lazer on George Street in Dublin. They had an extensive art house and international films section and we were working our way through them.Excellent film. There’s not much to fault here in this film. It’s got a great story, setting and delivery. It introduces you to interesting characters in one scene and then you have to hold out to find out what’s the beef with them.Camera work and the overall aesthetic of the film is spot on for a film set in the 60’s-70’s.The chicken sequence at the very beginning is bloody hilarious i think. The films set in the favelas of Rio De Janera,City of God,and boy is it a rough place.Kids running around with guns shooting the fuck out of people for no reason other that the fact that they have a gun so why not.The film’s told through quite a few intertwining flashbacks with a narrative over some bits.Good soundtrack too, some great Brazilian music and then more recognisable stuff for the disco scenes in the 70’s.Based on a true story too,you can see the photos and footage of some of the real characters over the credits. I’m just after having a look over the IMDB and it was nominated for 4 Oscars, didn’t win any of them but got a load form other festivals.

35 – American History X (1998)

You want ketchup on that ?

You want ketchup on that ?

I remember Barrett saying that American History X was one of his favourite films but i never rated it,i wrote it off as one of them films that uses too much graphic violence.Like them rubbish fottie gang movies that were being churned out in there dozens in the 90’s.Not my bag really.I was shocked to see it on the list never mind in the top 40.Shocked.The film is about a young teenage skinhead and his last 24 hours before he is killed by a black dude. There’s a load of flashbacks throughout that show how he and his brother came to be filled with so much hatred.Ah,the films not all gloom and doom.Dannys older brother Darryl sees the error of his ways while inside and comes out a new man and tries to get his brother away from the Nazi group.which he does. But it’s short lived.Norton got an Oscar nod for this and fair dues to him,it’s a good performance.I did notice The Clockwork Orange reference with Danny and his principle, the “what’s it going to be” line. It’s used numerous times in Burgess novel and it’s more or less that same scenario here. It’s an ultimatum.I don’t like the overall look of the film for some reason. There’s something not quite right about some of the black and white stuff.

61 – A Clockwork Orange (1971)

I was looking at some grafitti in the background and i think i spotted a Predator reference.

I was looking at some grafitti in the background and i think i spotted a Predator reference.

A Clockwork Orange was banned for some 20+ years in Ireland. When it was un-banned about 10 years ago was when i first saw it.They were selling DVDs cheap in Tower Records and i think my brother bought one. It’s another Kubrick film adapted from an Anthony Burgess novel of the same name.I have to say i don’t really like A Clockwork Orange the film.I dislike films with rapes and stuff like that in them,it makes me lose my faith in humanity for some reason.I read the book before the film and enjoyed it.I heard that Burgess had about 4 books he was trying to peddle to publishers but none were biting. Then one picked up on ACO and he made it big.He then slowly published his other novels as ‘new material’ he had just written. All the while they were just sitting in his desk in his house.Sly.After watching the film i knew it wasn’t for me,that’s not to say it’s not a good film. There’s a few good digs at the prison system and how they don’t want to spend money rehabilitating prisoners but are looking for the quick fix where they can save money, who cares if it’s not tried and tested. There are some interesting scenes and the sound track is totes-amazeballs.About 2 months after watching the film i went out and bought the Soundtrack. The film has an alternative ending to the novel. Also with the conditioning Alex gets did all the doctors not think what would happen if he had to defend himself?Or if someone found out he had the treatment they could exploit his weaknesses?

133 – Cool Hand Luke (1967)

Jesus Christ pose here, bit of symbolism

Jesus Christ pose here, bit of symbolism

Paul Newman has the lead here as the title character of the film.Luke gets busted cutting the tops off parking meters while drunk and gets 2 years on a chain gang.He doesn’t really give a shit about anything, law, opinions or religion. While inside his comrades affection grows for him and he becomes ‘the man’.He tries and succeeds in escaping about 3 times but always they get him back in the end. It’s these feats that get him admiration from all the other inmates. They admire him and think he’s better than him. Then they see him get broke by “the boss” and lose all respect for him.Could they have done what he was forced to do and not get broke? No.So why should it be any different for Luke? They put him on a pedestal but in the end he’s just a man like them.A good film with some quality laughs along the way. Some great camera work and tons of bits and pieces that have been used nowadays. Take for example the bosses glasses,South Park have used this more than once.
