31 – Léon: The Professional (1994)

Everyone!

Everyone!

Leon came to be as a result of a gap in the filming for The Fifth Element. Besson had 5 weeks before filming began and instead of sitting on his ass doing nothing he threw this script together and shot the movie.Good man yourself Luc.Leon is a classic, there’s a few scenes that are a bit odd but besides all that it works pretty well. The scenes i’m talking about are the ones where Mathilda is coming on to Leon.I think maybe even in one scene Leon is giving it consideration, well maybe not but he’s not barking back a straight ‘no’ but answers her calmy and slowly, treating her like an adult. In some aspects Mathilda seems mature for her age and in others you do have to remember she is a 12 year old kid so sometimes she doesn’t think.Like where she tells the receptionist that Leon is her lover.Pack the plant were off again. What does the plant signify? It’s Leon;sheltered from outside influences,in the big city but alone, safe and well looked after. My mate Kev in college told me after i said i couldn’t remember the end that the plant she was carrying around was a dope plant and in the end she starts to grow dope and gets rich. The guy had me convinced for about a week.In the American version theres 12 or so minutes cut from it,test audiences got uncomfortable with the Leons relationship with Mathilda. Americans.

62 – Amélie (2001)

v

You have to be quick if you’re going to get a screen grab of these tits.

I’m not quite sure what to call Amelie. It seems a bit art house but i think it’s pretty mainstream too.I’ve always regarded it the perfect chick flick,or one you’d watch if you were pitching woo at a girl.Well that’s the vibe i get off it anyway.Audrey Tautou looks not too bad in this.I think in nearly every shot she’s filmed from above as to exagerate her eyes and make her look more innocent or pure. The visual and special effects in this are perfect.I couldn’t find one i’d fault.I don’t have an internet connection right now but i’d love to know what the budget was for the SFX.I read online a few weeks ago that Audrey can’t actually skim stones and all the stone skimming sequences were done post prodution with after effects.I think it would have been easier, and cheaper,to teach her how to do it.There’s so many good features to the films;the fantasy sequences, good use of stock footage, original plot, musical score and the overall look of the film with the green filters and camera angles.A good indie film with,i guess,a cult following.

As per-usual with every French film you can see the Eiffel Tower out of the window.

As per-usual with every French film you can see the Eiffel Tower out of the window.

I was looking through some film trailers on IMDb about half a year ago and the trailer for this film piqued my interest. So i downloaded it and then started this list and forgot to watch it,until now,and i have to say that’s it’s an excellent film. It’s based on a true story and has some actual footage at the very end of the two people it’s based on.The story is about a tetraplegic who lost the use of his limbs in a paragliding accident. He’s a very wealthy but we never find out what he does or how he came to be rich.He hires a guy who’s a bit rough around the edges, coarse language, smokes joints and has weapons in his bag,but he likes him and they seem to get on pretty well and establish a good rapport. Driss, the helper, has some troubles at home. His mother/aunt is a single parent with too many kids and a teenage son who’s falling in with the wrong crowd. She’s having trouble supporting the family and kicks Driss out. Driss is no saint either, having just been released from prison for serving a 6 month stretch for a jewellery robbery. But the new job sets him on the straight and narrow. It’s a heart warming tale and it’s got some great bits of humour, the second last scene in the film where Driss shaves buddy is hilarious.

dropping the hand

dropping the hand

The Artist got quite a lot of Oscars if i remember correctly and so it should have. The film chronicles the rise and fall or an actor and a actress. The Artist,George,is an older silent actor who is at the peak of his career. While as Peppy is a fresh faced actress just beginning her career.Just as Peppy is establishing a name for herself in film the talkies are invented and she becomes a star.Meanwhile George has fallen on bad times and refused to do talking films. He goes bust and it’s a downwards spiral with a lot drink going on.Great film, not too long, excellent story, film score is bang on too.My download of the film was in 4:3 aspect ratio which gives an old 20’s feel to it.With the minimal audio and sounds it works to its advantage.

This thumb was up my ass

A rat controls a guy by pulling his hair.Making him do all manner of things like cooking food and stuff. The animation is pretty good, miles ahead of Monsters Inc but i just didn’t find it funny. Not enough jokes.

Ghost dog ?

This one’s about french playboy who writes for or edits Elle magazine. He’s hot shit. Then he has a wee stroke and gets that locked in syndrome. Can’t move shit but the brains fully operational. Its sad in the beginning when they have to sew up one of his eyes. There’s too many scenes of the before the accident and shots of him in a wheel chair fucked.I would have preferred if the whole film was done in the first person like the first 20 minutes of the film.I would have left in the shaving scene though, very good.

Bang! and the dirt is gone

La Haine is a French film and roughly translates as A Whales Vagina.Set in a gritty 90’s Paris against a backdrop of social turmoil stemming from an attack on a youth by the Police. The film focuses on 3 friends and follows them over a 24 hour period or there abouts. In the beginning there are riots and a cop loses his gun,Vinz finds it and the rest of the film asks the question ‘is it okay to kill a cop if they killed one of your friends?’ The final scene also;i didn’t see it coming.
