205 – Barry Lydon (1975)

give me a kiss , boy

give me a kiss , boy

This is a 3 hour long film so make sure you have some popcorn. It chronicles pretty much the whole life of Redmond Barry. He joins the army, deserts that, gets caught, joins another, deserts that. The first part of the film is comical. He spends much of it kissing men.As the film goes on Barry gets the notion that he wants to be a kept man and marries a lord who’s dying/dies wife. She is a good looking woman at first, especially the chair in the bath scene. He’s also a bit of a lady’s man and likes to whore himself about all the while living the high life off her cash.Things go tits up for Barry and he gets his comeuppance. This is a Stanley Kubrick film, the title sequence is not dissimilar from A Clockwork Orange’.

Now that was a film.Very cathartic near the end.Hard to believe that all this shit happened back then.If you haven’t already seen or heard about ITNOTF it’s about a couple of lads who are targeted as the scape goats for an IRA bombing in London in the mid 70’s.It’s got some dark humour and quite a bit of politics from the IRA to the English justice system.I thought the film might have been a bit biased but a quick wiki seems to say that it was pretty much spot on.
