5 – The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)

One of Halle Berrys earlier works.

One of Halle Berrys earlier works.

The last Leone film on the list and it starts in true Leone style. It’s got a cool title sequence, with animated text and what not. It’s also got all the other bucks form his other films,Van Cleef,Eastwood and the guy who had the musical watch in the last film. The beginning has his familiar beginnings;a few cowboys walking around, some good close ups and not much chat.In fact it’s 10 minutes 30 before the first word is uttered.Tense stuff. This one’s set during the civil war and revolves around 3 characters , The Good – Eastwood as Blondie (doesn’t even have blond hair), The Bad – Van Cleef and The Ugly – the fat guy.Blondie and the ugly have a racket going. The ugly is wanted and Blondie captures him and gets the bounty then frees him and they split it.About the middle of the movie Blondie ‘and the ugly find out theres $200,000 hidden somewhere. Each have half of the puzzle and are keeping it to them selves. The Bad also knows about the money and tries to muscle in.It’s a good old story,I’m not sure if it warrants a full 3 hours but my d/l said it was an extended version so maybe it’s shorter normally. As always there’s a mad soundtrack to this,Leone really goes all out.I think my dad had it on C.D. when i was a kid.I thought of a good drinking game for this film. Every time someone shoots a hat take a drink. You’ll be drunk in no time.

22 – Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)

This guy is reminiscing about his deal old mother.

This guy is reminiscing about his deal old mother.

Another Leone western, the last one on the list as far as i can tell.No Clint Eastwood or any of the other regulars, the lead’s taken by Charles Bronson.I’m not sure if i’m 100% sold on him either. Here’s a run down of the plot:A good looking thing that could be a ringer for Rachel Welch is marrying into a big ginger family out west. But the day she lands in on the train the whole family is slaughtered. We find out why later,it’s something to do with putting train tracks through his property. The train line guy thought he could just wipe out the family and get the land at a public auction, but he didn’t know that the ginger married this woman in secret about a month earlier. Now she complicates the deal a bit as she has now acquired this bit of land.I’m not entirely sure how Bronson works into the whole picture or who he actually is but he gets involved and helps out the damsel and shoots a few baddies too and the while he squeezes out a few tunes on his old harmonica. The other supporting actor playing Cheyenne is a more likable character,he’s got good lines too.For example he talking to a sneaky guy who’s wearing a belt and suspenders and comes out with this one “You’re wearing a belt and suspenders. How am i meant to trust a man who can’t even trust his own trousers?“This film is pretty long and i’ll confess i was dozing off in parts but i do feel well rested for the next film on the list.

92 – Unforgiven (1992)

Hookers of the old west.Slim pickings indeed.

Hookers of the old west.Slim pickings indeed.

Unforgiven is another western with horses and guns and all that shit.A hooker is with a john and she laughs because he’s got a small ‘pecker’.He loses the rag and takes out a knife and starts to do a bit of carving on her face.No great loss as she was really plain looking anyway. The scars will add character. The other 4 or 5 hookers decide to put up a bounty of $1000 to get the guy killed and his friend who was with him that night.Roll in Eastwood,he was a cold hearted killer some 11 years ago but his wife got him off the sauce and out of the killing. He’s now a pig farmer. But the wife is long dead and when a kid who idolises him asks him to help with the bounty he reluctantly agrees, more so for the money for his kids. They pick up Freeman to complete the troupe. He seems to be the only good shooter among. The kids blind and Eastwood hasn’t shot a gun in ages. They find the two guys and it pretty much goes to plan except Freeman freezes and decides it’s not for him and heads home.Just when the film was getting good it ends.As soon as Eastwood has a glass of booze he turns into the hard ass he was 11 ago and we learn it was the booze that fucked him over.Moral of the story-don’t drink.

Guns.A hundred uses, killing machine, hammer, nut cracker, dangerous dildo. The list goes on.

Another Sergio Leone western here.I think about 130 movies ago i said i hate westerns.I think I’ll amend that statement now and say : i hate westerns with a long meandering convoluted love story, real westerns however are pretty good. For example Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid.FAFDM is about a couple of bounty hunters who seem to be hunting the same guy. Initially there’s animosity between them,i don’t see why really.there’s two haves to a Bounty isn’t there?,but then they team up.It’s a pretty good film overall, few bits and pieces i could pick at.Like in a couple of scenes people get shot a shit load of times but their shirt doesn’t have any holes in it.I guess just cutting corners on SFX or on a budget. The audio over-dub too seemed to be way off and audio was out of sync for a good potion of the film. I’m not sure if that’s Leones style but it was definitely different. There’s a good revelation in the last 5 minutes of the film that i never would have predicted.

Looks Like I Picked the Wrong Week to quit Amphetamines

Another western here,i can see why this was so high up the list. There are some really good cuts and transitions AND ,wait for it, it runs in real time. The first film i seen that ran in real time was Phonebooth and that was around 2002.You can really feel the tension build as the time ticks down. The plot is this;a Marshall of a small town put a crook down and he got sentenced to a hanging, guy got sent up north and it was reduced to life and now he got a pardon and is landing into town at noon on the train. His 3 buddies are already at the station waiting for him.Kane, the Marshall is trying to get a posse together to help him and spends the hour looking for some.He gets none.At noon shit goes down and we have a classic shoot out.

Paul Newman’s off to clown college

Here’s the second film in a row that started out black and white and after ten minutes changed to colour.I was a bit worried that it would stay with that old style sepia-like look because it was a little hard to watch. But when if switched it made the film 5 times better. The casting of Paul Newman and Robert Redford as the two leads is perfect and Newmans one liners and comedic timing is spot on.BCATSK is about two bank robbers who are being tracked by an elite hit squad hired by a man who has lost loads of money to them via bank and train robberies. They chased throughout america and decide to flee to Bolivia. There they resume there bank robberies and are soon being chased by the Bolivian police. When they decide to go straight that’s when things go tits up and they’re forced to get back into robberies. It did have a few montages in it,some were too long.

say pilgrim 3 times in a mirror and the ghost of john wayne appears

John Wayne again. This guy gets around. This film’s in black and white but I’d bet you a fiver he’s wearing the same red shirt from the other two films off this list. This western is a little more bearable because JW isn’t the main character,it’s James Stewart.I don’t mind Stewart as an actor, there’s something about his accent and that southern drawl.Well about the film;it’s starts out GREAT,what with Wayne being dead and stuck in a box, then Stewart tells the tale of (see film title) in the style of one long flash back.Stewart is a lawyer and brings law and order to a small town out west that seems to be over run with highway men and the like. Not the worst western.
