43 – Spirited Away (2001)

Flying dog/dragons and shit.

Spirited Away is another whim-sickle film from Studio Ghibli. It follows the same sort of genre as many of their others,it has spirits, ghosts, monsters, spells, dragons and curses. And like the others it features a young child,a girl called Chitiro or Sia,as the lead. The girl gets transported off to some spirit work by mistake while out on a walk with her parents.Throughout the course of the films she’s trying to save her parents and get home but there’s loads of obstacles in her way.Visually there are some interesting looking characters knocking around the bath house in the spirit place and the story’s not too bad either. There are a few bits where the plot seems to be moving a little slow,a few scenes running just a few seconds longer, but if keep noticing them then it seems to add up.I watched the dubbed version with the subs just to see which was better and i think the dubbed is better. The text with the subs isn’t as accurate as what they’re saying.A good Ghibli film,i did prefer Howls Moving Castle myself.

50 – Taxi Driver (1976)

I LOL'ed at this.

I LOL’ed at this.

As famous as Taxi Driver is I’ve never seen it before. It’s about an ex marine and Vietnam vet who works the night shift driving a taxi in New York. The isolation and loneliness get to be too much for him and he cracks up.He definitely has some sort of post traumatic stress disorder too from the war.In the beginning he’s stuck in a rut and is boozing it up and taking pills. But half way through the film he formulates a plan to get rid of the scum in the city by buying some guns and shooting them. It’s this idea that fills his life with a sense of purpose and he gets into shape and gets off the booze and that.Taxi Driver is a bit of a weird film.Travis is a bit of tough one to work out.In parts he seems like he socially inept but in others he seems really confident and put his point across easily. But it swings back and forth so much you don’t know how he’s going to react.Travis strikes up a relationship with a teenage twelve year old hooker and he tries to do 1 good thing with his life;get her out of the game and back with her family.Which he does in his own blood-lust filled way.Good film overall, there was a few scenes i would have lobbed a few minutes off them and sometimes the trumpet,or whatever the fuck instrument was, was a little over bearing.I checked the credits and Scorsese was a part in it.The massive douche who’s watching his cheating wife.Keep an eye out for him.

You wouldn’t away with this now a days. You’d be arrested and signing on the sex offenders list for life.

Life Is Beautiful is a bit of a misleading title for this film. After watching the last last 30 minutes i think a more apt title would be Life Is Shit. I’ve never seen this film before but i bought a copy on DVD for my parents once because it was popular at the time and had gotten a few awards. For anyone who doesn’t know the plot,it’s about a family who gets shipped off to a concentration camp by the Nazis./sounds sad right? The main character, the dad,is called Guido and he is a Jew. His wife is an Italian and they have a young son too that is also shipped off to the camp. The mother pleads to go with her family.Guido is a charming upbeat guy who seems to live in a fantasy, there’s something very whimsical about him.And it’s with his up beat attitude and constant games he’s playing that the whole concentration camp thing doesn’t really effect you on a personal level.Even his final moments i felt distanced from the whole thing. The film came out in 1997 but the whole feel and look of it makes it seem like it’s from the eighties.

The so called socialist party with their hundreds of thousands of spies, and that’s no exaggeration, all spying on each other.Looking for the most minuscule detail to rat out their fellow country men for what? For a corrupt governing body to abuse its power for its own personnel gain.Well let me get into the plot for a bit.A professional interrogator, and spy who is now a lecture-er in an East Germany college teaching new recruits about the skills needed to spot someone in cahoots with the west,is pulled into  help out an old friend investigate on an artist. The artist is a writer and writes plays. But there’s an ulterior motive. The guy is of no interest to the Stazi, however his girlfriend is of interest to some fat fuck.So what does he do?Abuses his power and resources to try and catch out her boyfriend and get him banged up.Thus leaving her free for him. However the guy leading the operation and monitoring has some sort of change of heart.By living his life vicariously through the writer and his girlfriend he finds some sort of common ground or compassion and does his best to conceal their illegal activity. It’s all very out of character for him. When the wall comes down everything changes and the writer tracks down the man who was responsible for monitoring him with info he got via the freedom of information act. It’s a good film.I wasn’t sure what year it was set at during the beginning.I may have blinked and missed a title card. But the clothes and the sets gave nothing away.

I was looking at some grafitti in the background and i think i spotted a Predator reference.

A Clockwork Orange was banned for some 20+ years in Ireland. When it was un-banned about 10 years ago was when i first saw it.They were selling DVDs cheap in Tower Records and i think my brother bought one. It’s another Kubrick film adapted from an Anthony Burgess novel of the same name.I have to say i don’t really like A Clockwork Orange the film.I dislike films with rapes and stuff like that in them,it makes me lose my faith in humanity for some reason.I read the book before the film and enjoyed it.I heard that Burgess had about 4 books he was trying to peddle to publishers but none were biting. Then one picked up on ACO and he made it big.He then slowly published his other novels as ‘new material’ he had just written. All the while they were just sitting in his desk in his house.Sly.After watching the film i knew it wasn’t for me,that’s not to say it’s not a good film. There’s a few good digs at the prison system and how they don’t want to spend money rehabilitating prisoners but are looking for the quick fix where they can save money, who cares if it’s not tried and tested. There are some interesting scenes and the sound track is totes-amazeballs.About 2 months after watching the film i went out and bought the Soundtrack. The film has an alternative ending to the novel. Also with the conditioning Alex gets did all the doctors not think what would happen if he had to defend himself?Or if someone found out he had the treatment they could exploit his weaknesses?

62 – Amélie (2001)

v

You have to be quick if you’re going to get a screen grab of these tits.

I’m not quite sure what to call Amelie. It seems a bit art house but i think it’s pretty mainstream too.I’ve always regarded it the perfect chick flick,or one you’d watch if you were pitching woo at a girl.Well that’s the vibe i get off it anyway.Audrey Tautou looks not too bad in this.I think in nearly every shot she’s filmed from above as to exagerate her eyes and make her look more innocent or pure. The visual and special effects in this are perfect.I couldn’t find one i’d fault.I don’t have an internet connection right now but i’d love to know what the budget was for the SFX.I read online a few weeks ago that Audrey can’t actually skim stones and all the stone skimming sequences were done post prodution with after effects.I think it would have been easier, and cheaper,to teach her how to do it.There’s so many good features to the films;the fantasy sequences, good use of stock footage, original plot, musical score and the overall look of the film with the green filters and camera angles.A good indie film with,i guess,a cult following.

End of the story.Get it?End of the story.Obvious shit.

In my second year in college i lived with  guy, lets call him Ciaran(because that was his name, that had a small collection of DVDs,maybe 20 or so.But he watched them numerous times.I think he watched The Green Mile over a dozen times.I could never. He was studying sports fitness and this was one of his favourite films.Maybe it was because he wasn’t doing some sort of course relevant to media that i just poo-ppo’d The Green Mile. But as i look at it now some 9 years later,it’s not that bad.Stephen King knows how to write a film. You just have to look at number 1 on the list to see what i mean. The Green Mile is maybe 40 minutes longer than it should be but it’s good. There’s some good casting and a lot of actors that have worked with each other before,i won’t list them. Some less than lovable characters too,for example Percy. There was one scene that i wanted to punch my laptop screen so bad for in the hope that by magic it would travel directly to Percy in the film. The Green Mile is full of religious references like a man condemned to death who can preform miracles and who most people know is innocent.Jesus right here guys. It’s fairly obvious when you think about it,but still makes for an interesting film. The last scenes that give some sort of closure with Paul,i could have done without. The film should have ended when John died.Just my opinion. Also the CGI for the bugs coming out of the guys mouth didn’t look right.

Draw me jack.Like one of your French models…

Lawrence of Arabia, not to be confused with the adult film ‘Lawrence of Her Labia’,is about a British soldier who is sent into the desert to see what the Arabs plans are regarding the Turks and their army.He gets in well with the desert people and rallies with them to invade Damascus and take a Turkish garrison beside the some canal.Lawrence makes it back to Cairo where he was based before the whole thing and lets the Brits know what he’s done.He gets a commendation and asks for guns, artillery, armoured cars and some other stuff and goes back with the desert tribes and starts blowing up Turkish rail-roads to disrupt their army logistics.Lawrence comes across as an eccentric,at times camp, blond Brit among brutal Arabs, but he does have a dark side as we see him kill a few people. And enjoy it.In the end Lawrence,or as everyone calls him “orange”,wins Damascus for the Arabs. But with all the different tribes controlling a separate resource in the town it all goes to shit.No phones because someone else controls the generators and they’re fried. No water because there’s no power for the pumps and so on.All the Arabs give up and just leave the place in a huge mess,it’s now the Brits jobs to sort out the whole mess. One of the tribal leaders has a good quote near the start “my mother mated with a scorpion”.

Boner hat.

Boner hat.

As i read the credits at the beginning i only recognised 2 names,Peck and Duvall and at over 50 years old i thought it might have been one of Duvalls early films.I completely forgot he was in it until the last 5 minutes.Needless to say he doesn’t have a big role,in fact i don’t think he has a speaking roll. The plot of To Kill a Mocking Bird seems abit familiar,i think there was a  few films in the early to mid nineties that had similar roles. If i remember correctly there’s a John Grisham adaptation with Bullock and  Mc Connachty in it.Maybe Samuel L. Jackson too, that guy’s in everything.Set in Alabama a Negro is accused of beating and taking advantage of a young woman.A local white lawyer defends him, much to the disapproval of all the white folk. The case doesn’t go too good for the black guy even though the evidence is stacked in his favour. In the end the guilty get their comeuppance. The sheriff has a good line near the end that i liked “Let the dead bury the dead” poignant

Just shaving this womans face here.

The third Chaplin film so far on the list,i think, but the first one with sound.Chaplin looks to be in his 40’s or 50’s in this film but the jokes are still coming quick and  fast. With him being able to vocalize his jokes now there are a a lot more of them and he doesn’t have to mug at the camera for the viewer to get them,he can just add a little dialogue or a quip and leave it at that. The plot if you haven’t already guessed is pretty much a spoof of Hitler and WWI.Names and places have all been changed but everyone knows whoa nd where he’s implying. There’s a good disclaimer at the beginning that states any similarity between the Jewish barber is coincidental, mind you not a disclaimer for the Hitler-esque character but the barber,ha.The best Chaplin film on the list with quite a few bits and pieces reminding me of The Marx brothers or Groucho.Worth a watch, the end monologue where he gives a heartfelt speech to the camera about how dictators will die eventually and with them their regime.I think Chaplin was accused of being a communist after this film came out and he got into a lot of bother and left America for good to get away from it all.
