27 – Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

A little off the top buddy?

A little off the top buddy?

The Indiana Jones original trilogy are classics.I can’t comment on the Crystal Skull one because it was so unmemorable that i can’t remember it.I think it had aliens in it so that scrapped it for me.Harrison Ford is on form for Raiders of The Lost Ark,the looks and expressions, the one liners and all the other comedic bits are delivered with ease and excellent timing. But i guess that’s all down to the writing too. This is the first film in the set,i prefer the one with Sean Conner y as his dad,was that one the Last Crusade?Anyways this one’s about the Nazi, they all seem to be about Nazis, and their quest to get the Ark of The Covenant. This ark contains the ten commandments. The Nazis believe that it’s a phone that you can call up God and have the craic with him.Who knows maybe it is.Indy thinks differently,he saw a picture in a book that shows it as a big spooky ghost that kills people. When it does get opened it’s more like a direct line to Satan not the other guy.Watching the credits i noticed a Micheal Moore as a unit Director or something to that degree,no wait,a quick google reveals it’s not him.

30 – It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)

Breaking records

Breaking records

When i started watching this film i thought for the first 30 minutes or so it should have been called it’s a shit life, but as the film went on it picked up and had a few comical bits where i was LOL’ing.James Stewart plays a guy running a savings and loan in a small town. He’s on a bridge and just about to end it all but he says a little prayer to “God” and low and behold an angel comes down to help him see the light and all that rubbish. There’s a strange bit with the angels talking, where they’re represented by stars and galaxies. As i watched the film i started to think there wasn’t enough good bits for me to warrent it being on the list. There was some really bad camera stuff, jumping around and coming out of focus, the quality seemed to go from crystal clear in some shots to blurry as fuck in others.I’d say this is due to the exterior stuff and studio stuff.Either way these things got my goat up.This is a Christmas movie too and it’s regularly on t.v. around then, but i wouldn’t watch it.Depressing watching a guy waste his life and not follow his dream he had since he was young, then he try and kill himself. Eek

BACK BREAKING SHIT YO!

BACK BREAKING SHIT YO!

Another Nolan film here, this ones also got his brother Jonathan as a co-writer.Running at around 2 hours 40 it’s a long one and for me i definitely feel it.The first time i went to see it i was dozing off. When it was just out in the cinema one of the guys was going to see it for the 6th time in a week.I said i knew how he felt i couldn’t stay awake for all of it either. This seems like the last Batman film with everything tied up in a nice bow at the end.As far as i know Nolan is stepping back from the franchise but he’s buggered it up for the next guy;he’s used up the baddies already-Bane,the Joker, scarecrow and Two Face.In this film we’re introduced to Cat-woman aswell. When i heard Anne Hathaway was going to be in this i thought ‘shit’ but i was pleasantly surprised. She’s not bad,no Michelle Pfeffer but who is?Now let me get to Bane,Banes story isn’t long.He got his face messed up and a morphine addicted doctor screwed up his reconstruction surgery.I think. For some reason also he has the strangest accent that you wouldn’t associate with a villain living down a hole in the middle of nowhere. His voice reminds me of Patrick Stewarts.I’m just after going through the credits again to see if there was a voice actor for Bane and there isn’t.

36 – Apocalypse Now (1979)

:(

😦

Apocalypse Now is the sequel to Mel Gibsons smash hit Apocalyptico also about war and jungles.Not.No it’s about a colonel,Brando, who goes renegade during the Vietnam war and forms a killing squad of south Vietnamese who travel about the jungle massacring the enemy.Sheen is hired by the army to sneak into Cambodia and kill the insane Brando. As he gets closer and closer to the target the starts to relate with him and when it comes to the crunch he doesn’t know what to do.There’s a few famous faces in the cast here, with a very young Harrison Ford,an always old looking Duvall and a teenage Larry Fishbourne. Magnificently shot and with the odd bit of humor and surrealism.Like with the USO show in the middle of nowhere and the playboy bunnies what nearly get bum rushed by the randy soldiers.

Fuck yeah! How cool does this look?!

Fuck yeah! How cool does this look?!

Tony told me once that Terminator 2 was his favorite film.I always over looked it and if it was on the t.v. wouldn’t watch it.But after watching it just now i’ll do a 180 on the thing.Great film,Cameron directed and co-wrote it and it’s bang on.I think i seen Terminator 1 when i was a kid and hated it and just associated the two.The story’s great and the casting is perfect.Robert Patrick and his portrayal of the T-1000 is great,he seems more machine that human. The films not perfect but what is?I noticed some of the stunt doubles well different from the people they were meant to be.Be it Furlong or Arnie or whoever. The download i got for the film is the special edition. The one with some 10 or so extra cuts/scenes added.I usually remember a film scene for scene after one viewing but there was a few in this that i didn’t know also Arnie kept jumping between young and old.I think there was 10 years between the re-shoots for the added stuff.I’ll spin of a couple and let me know if i’m wrong:the T-1000 gets all buggered up after the liquid nitrogen and his hands get stuck to a rail, then his feet gets stuck to the ground.Wait maybe i’m wrong here because i do remember there being a scene that was added where the Terminator repairs his eye and that one wasn’t in this.Strange.Great film either way.

This guy is super animated. He reminded me of the Bridges in Airplane.

Peter Sellers stars in this Kubrick classic. There wasn’t any credits after the film so i’m not sure how many characters he played but there’s at least 2.The film is about a military sergeant who’s a bit nuts,he has conspiracy theory’s about fluoride in the water and has a gattling gun hidden in his golf bag in his office, who single handily launches a nuclear war against the Russians. He issues a code which activates some 30-40 B-52’s directive of attacking Russian and dropping bombs all over the place. The president tries to stop it but doesn’t know the 3 digit cancellation code.It sounds like serious stuff right? But as the film goes on you realize that this is a dark humor, the film gets more and more daft as it nears its climax and i have to hand it to sellers he has his moments.I don’t think I’ve seen a comedy directed by Kubrick so far and it’s not all that bad,it just takes a little while to get into it.

43 – Spirited Away (2001)

Flying dog/dragons and shit.

Spirited Away is another whim-sickle film from Studio Ghibli. It follows the same sort of genre as many of their others,it has spirits, ghosts, monsters, spells, dragons and curses. And like the others it features a young child,a girl called Chitiro or Sia,as the lead. The girl gets transported off to some spirit work by mistake while out on a walk with her parents.Throughout the course of the films she’s trying to save her parents and get home but there’s loads of obstacles in her way.Visually there are some interesting looking characters knocking around the bath house in the spirit place and the story’s not too bad either. There are a few bits where the plot seems to be moving a little slow,a few scenes running just a few seconds longer, but if keep noticing them then it seems to add up.I watched the dubbed version with the subs just to see which was better and i think the dubbed is better. The text with the subs isn’t as accurate as what they’re saying.A good Ghibli film,i did prefer Howls Moving Castle myself.

47 – Vertigo (1958)

Man i'm so baked...

Man i’m so baked…

Vertigo is a weird one.At first it’s some sort of supernatural detective yarn but 40 minutes from the end it jumps to the classic Hitchcock murder-mystery perfect crime Plot.Stewart plays a San Francisco detective who,in the course of a rooftop chase, witnesses another cop fall to his death. It’s this scare that leads to him developing vertigo. As he’s can’t go near any high places he quits the force indefinitely.Just as he quits he gets a call from an old college friend who wants him to investigate his wife. Now here’s where shit goes well and truly bizarre. As strange as the plot went i had to take it all in as-is,but i was left thinking that it was Hitchcocks style. But as the story went on,and on,it was all a big hoax. I’m telling you this because i wouldn’t bother recommending this film. There was 2 or 3 good bits where they went a bit crazy with the visuals. One bit was animated like a cartoon and another seemed like an acid trip.I think it was this acid trip that put Stewarts character in hospital for some months.

Mom i’m just going to the cinema to catch a movie.I’ll be back later.

A classic. For some reason i didn’t expect this to be on the list. Not that i don’t like it,i love it,a pretty good trilogy in my opinion. For anyone whos been living in a cave since the early 80’s the films about a scientist who invents a time machine and the hi-jinks had by him and his 17 year old friend. Michael J Fox stars as Marty McFly who is accidentally transported back 30 years to before his parents met.He messes up their first encounter thus endangering his existence.Butterfly effect. Martys town in the 80’s is a shit hole for some reason,we’re never told why but i did notice that the mayor was black and was getting re-elected. In the 50’s its a white mayor and the town looks great. Is this a bit racist then, black mayor and the town goes to shit?If you can get over the whole breaking the rules of time travel then this is quite an entertaining film.I’ve seen it probably a half dozen times at least i was still laughing through most of it.I was a bit sad when the film ended though, seeing this made me want to watch the other two.

Totoro has a cameo.

After watching Toy Story 1 quite a few films ago you really can see how the animation has come on in leaps and bounds. The textures on all the materials looks way better. For example little things like adding small amounts of rust to metals and scrapes and blemishes to other materials. Also the people don’t look like disgusting monsters now.Toy Story 3 wraps up the whole story of Andy. From child to youth to adolescent. In this final(?) chapter Andy is going off to college and is clearing up his room.He decides to not dump his toys but to store them in the attic instead. But some mix-up his mum puts the bag of toys out on the curb to be dumped. And now we have pretty much the same plot as the other two films;toys somehow get away from the house and try and make their way back.I liked Toy Story 3 because it had a small dark aspect with one toy turning bad and turning into some sort of tyrant.Overall a good film, not juts for the kids. The only pitfall is that annoying music that all the other films had.I hate it.
