6 – 12 Angry Men (1957)

Break him in two? I bet you did.

Break him in two? I bet you did.

12 Angry Men is about 12 jurors trying to reach a judgement on murder case. This is an old one and i remember seeing it a good few years ago and thinking it was great. There’e quite a bit of dialogue in this film, well i guess it’s all dialogue. It was nice to get a break form the 3 and 4 hour films that have peppered the top 245 of the list.12 Angry Men runs at 96 minutes but it just flies in because it’s pretty fast paced.Lee Cobb from The Waterfront is in this basically playing the same person again;aggressive, loud and obnoxious. So as the plot goes they have a 11-1 guilty verdict with Fonda being the one  saying not guilty.Using rational thought and producing a similar knife used in the murder, which as meant to be rare,he wins one over. Then another, then another. It’s intense at parts and tempers get flared. Also this is during the hottest day in the year and there’s no aircon and the fan broke. So everyone is a bit on edge anyway.A great film. Some really nice close up shots of the peoples faces when you can see them changing the vote in their head.

8 – Schindler’s List (1993)

If there's tits in a film i'll find them.

If there’s tits in a film I’ll find them.

Schindler’s List is a romantic comedy in which Liam Neeson plays Schindler,a man who loses his memory every night when he falls asleep. He relies on a complex series of notes and lists to function in modern day Miami.Rob Schneider plays the love interest. Actually nothing could be further from the truth. Here we have movie 6 i think that’s about the Holocaust .Schindler is a businessman who runs a pots and pans factory with a Jewish workforce. This is all during world war 2 and as you may or not know the Germans weren’t the Jews biggest fans.So Neeson tries to help them by giving them a job.If you’re a skilled worker then you won’t be shipped off to the camps or Auschwitz. There’s a lot of bribery going on and Neeson spends all his money/valuables in order to try and help them. Ralph Fiennes plays a sadistic Nazi guy in this who takes pleasure in killing Jews for no reason.Bad fucker. When Neeson show s a bit of compassion for the Jews and treats them like humans Fiennes has him taken in for questioning to see if he’s a sympathizer. The movie has quite a lot of people getting killed and the brutality of the Nazi is fucking depressing and keep in mind this is all a true story.I got a bit teary eyed at one point during the film,i had bug spray on my finger and itched my eye.

17 – Seven Samurai (1954)

I'm not sure why this samurai went to battle with his bare ass out.

I’m not sure why this samurai went to battle with his bare ass out.

Here’s an old one,1954,you wouldn’t think it from the dialogue. There’s some good insults in it that are still used frequently these days. The wipes are pretty good from scene to scene, they look quite animated. In 50’s films they all have a dissolve but in this it’s all Left-to-right fade thing. The earliest ones I’ve ever seen. The plot sees a crap village that regularly gets ambushed by bandits, hard asses, and they decide to hire some Samurai’s to kill the buggers. They rationalize that they need 5 so they get 7,and some are pretty shite. The Samurai train the farmers to fight, build fences and moats and instill a team spirit in them.As the farmers finish harvest they get ready for a big battle. Some the Samurai seem pretty Calais when they’re picking them off and counting numbers.I didn’t like this film, man was it a hard watch,i kept getting sleepy or bored and had to pause it.It’s not for me then.

25 – Casablanca (1942)

The blue parrot?More like the grey parrot.

The blue parrot?More like the grey parrot.

One of the most quoted films ever in my opinion. The last 10 minutes more than the rest of the film.Bogart stars as Rick, owner of Ricks American Café.As you probably guessed the film is set in Casablanca in the north of Africa during Germany’s invasion through Europe.Loads of people are trying to leave for America because shits about to hit the fan  and the only way to get to the U.S. is via Lisbon but there’s Nazis everywhere so people have to go to Casablanca to get to Lisbon.Ricks old flame shows up with her husband intending to leave but Rick has acquired their travel documents. That sums up the whole plot. Not much to it.There’s a few good jokes , notably the old couple who get taught English by some guy who can hardly speak it himself. The song ‘as time goes by’ is played about 28 times in the 105 minutes of film.No mean feat I’ll give you that.

29 – Psycho (1960)

Norman goes a bit loopy.

Norman goes a bit loopy.

Bras were so much pointier back in the days.I mentioning this because of the scene at 11 minutes in,but i’ve noticed over a good few old or 50’s era films the bras or shape of a womans cleavage was pointier. You could take an eye out with one on a cold day i’d bet.Psycho is about a guy who runs a motel that’s off the beaten track who murders and kills young(ish) women. The woman in question is a secretary or something like that, who decides to steal $40,000 a client leaves in the office to pay for a house he’s buying. On the spur of the moment she decides to steal it and drive off.Drive to where? We never have a clue,i think we’re in the same boat as her. There’s some really dumb bits in this film. She’s being watched by a cop so she pulls into a used car garage and trys to swap her car and buy a new one in about 2 minutes.I think in reality if i were to trade in my old car the garage would want their mechanic to give it a look over wouldn’t they?Psycho doesn’t follow the Hitchcock formula of a perfect crime,it’s pretty much the opposite. It’s just about a nutter.Norman is a hard one to figure out;one moment he looks confident and is cracking jokes and other times he’s nervous and looks anxious.I guess that’s meant to highlight his psychosis or schizophrenia.Peep holes,oh shit don’t get me started on the peep holes in the film.If you were to make a peephole how would you go about it?Drill a small hole, cover one side with something so they don’t notice?Nope, make a hole the size of a XXL pizza one one side of the wall with a small hole on the other.Jesus.

30 – It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)

Breaking records

Breaking records

When i started watching this film i thought for the first 30 minutes or so it should have been called it’s a shit life, but as the film went on it picked up and had a few comical bits where i was LOL’ing.James Stewart plays a guy running a savings and loan in a small town. He’s on a bridge and just about to end it all but he says a little prayer to “God” and low and behold an angel comes down to help him see the light and all that rubbish. There’s a strange bit with the angels talking, where they’re represented by stars and galaxies. As i watched the film i started to think there wasn’t enough good bits for me to warrent it being on the list. There was some really bad camera stuff, jumping around and coming out of focus, the quality seemed to go from crystal clear in some shots to blurry as fuck in others.I’d say this is due to the exterior stuff and studio stuff.Either way these things got my goat up.This is a Christmas movie too and it’s regularly on t.v. around then, but i wouldn’t watch it.Depressing watching a guy waste his life and not follow his dream he had since he was young, then he try and kill himself. Eek

35 – American History X (1998)

You want ketchup on that ?

You want ketchup on that ?

I remember Barrett saying that American History X was one of his favourite films but i never rated it,i wrote it off as one of them films that uses too much graphic violence.Like them rubbish fottie gang movies that were being churned out in there dozens in the 90’s.Not my bag really.I was shocked to see it on the list never mind in the top 40.Shocked.The film is about a young teenage skinhead and his last 24 hours before he is killed by a black dude. There’s a load of flashbacks throughout that show how he and his brother came to be filled with so much hatred.Ah,the films not all gloom and doom.Dannys older brother Darryl sees the error of his ways while inside and comes out a new man and tries to get his brother away from the Nazi group.which he does. But it’s short lived.Norton got an Oscar nod for this and fair dues to him,it’s a good performance.I did notice The Clockwork Orange reference with Danny and his principle, the “what’s it going to be” line. It’s used numerous times in Burgess novel and it’s more or less that same scenario here. It’s an ultimatum.I don’t like the overall look of the film for some reason. There’s something not quite right about some of the black and white stuff.
