4 – Pulp Fiction (1994)

Tim what ever floats your boat buddy.

Tim what ever floats your boat buddy.

I think Pulp Fiction is one of the most over rated films out there .There are some good scenes and a few bits of dialogue but as a whole,i don’t like it.Even at this early stage in his career Tarantino has a few title cards that aren’t even needed. Why must he spoon feed the audience?Give them a bit of credit for gods sake. For example when Marsellus is introduced he’s talking to Vince or Jules and there’s a title card that shows their names and within about 15 seconds they mention their own names in casual conversation. There’s a few other things that got my goat.Quite a few.Lets see, first , when Vince is having dinner with Mia he asks to try her shake. He then goes to remove her straw. What the fuck was that about? Was he going to remove hers put his in,remove his and pop hers back?Eh, the price of a box of smokes is $1.40 but a gram of heroin in $300?Does that sound right to you?And that’s the cheap heroin too,Vince bought the $500 stuff. Also heroin is off white a more brown colour, sure it comes from opium,it’s not white and i think Mia would have noticed if it wasn’t white.Em what else,Butchs woman is like 13 years old-maybe 10 mentally,oh Butch has a smoke after the fight as the taxi drives ,window fully down beside him and lights a smoke off a match.Bullshit that match would be blown out and his fag would fly out the window and he’d be sucked out into space. The end.

Eminem is The Joker?

Eminem is The Joker?

Dark Knight?Dark shite more like.Nah,that’s a bit harsh innit?I’m not sure why but i don’t like this film.Maybe it was all the hype surrounding it what with The Ledge dying pretty soon after filming.I liked the one before this and the one after it but this one i thought was just a bit average.Nothing spectacular. The plot for the Dark Knight; we’re introduced to a new madman,The Joker, and a new good guy in Harvey Dent.Dent is the new district attorney and seems like he’s got the guts to tackle the mobsters and shut down organised crime. The Joker,as mad as he looks,is running about setting up games and planting hundreds or barrels of petrol and bombs everywhere.I don’t know where he gets the time.Busy guy.The Joker gets Batman by the balls, metaphorically, and blackmails him into showing his face.He starts killing off civilians so then Gotham hates him. There’s also a change or actress in this if nobody noticed,Katie Holmes was booted off and the door looking Maggie Glynenenenenenthall takes her spot. Her performance is pretty poor in my opinion. At the end the film just ends. That’s it.No inclination of what to expect in the next instalment, this kind of left me on a bum note.

18 – The Matrix (1999)

After Neo learns Jujitsu he learns some other needed fighting styles, drunken being one of them.

After Neo learns Jujitsu he learns some other needed fighting styles, drunken being one of them.

Here we have a pretty wicked Anime called Ghost in The Shell, wait i meant a live action film called The Matrix. The Matrix is a highly original film apart from all the bits they ripped off scene for scene from the Anime that they had to get legally cleared to use in the film.Besides that it’s okay.I for one am not a fan.It centrals around a guy called Neo who meets a black dude who’s some sort of drug dealer. Well at least it’s realistic. I’m not sure if this films stands the test of time. There were loads of bits that either seemed very camp or just didn’t feel right.I’ll try and not go into a rant here but, plot holes, the whole concept of machines growing humans to generate electricity is a pile of dung. For one surely it would take a shit load of electricity to keep this humans plugged into this big fake world and then there’s the actual fact that humans consume energy and not generate it.

25 – Casablanca (1942)

The blue parrot?More like the grey parrot.

One of the most quoted films ever in my opinion. The last 10 minutes more than the rest of the film.Bogart stars as Rick, owner of Ricks American Café.As you probably guessed the film is set in Casablanca in the north of Africa during Germany’s invasion through Europe.Loads of people are trying to leave for America because shits about to hit the fan  and the only way to get to the U.S. is via Lisbon but there’s Nazis everywhere so people have to go to Casablanca to get to Lisbon.Ricks old flame shows up with her husband intending to leave but Rick has acquired their travel documents. That sums up the whole plot. Not much to it.There’s a few good jokes , notably the old couple who get taught English by some guy who can hardly speak it himself. The song ‘as time goes by’ is played about 28 times in the 105 minutes of film.No mean feat I’ll give you that.

Old Alfreds at it once more with another psychological thriller and starring again is good old reliable James Stewart. This time he plays a photographer who is bound to his apartment after busting up his leg taking action shots at a formula one race.It crashed into him.So he’s wheelchair bound and it’s a massive heat wave and he’s spent the last 6 weeks observing his neighbours through his window. He thinks he’s witnessed a murder and then starts obsessing about it.I’d never seen Rear Window before but I’ve seen some parodies, most notably The Simpsons,so i had the general gist of the plot. It’s really straight forward and i was waiting for the twist at the end but there wasn’t one.I felt robbed by it.That’s all I’m going to say on the matter. The film feels boring because your looking at the same set for the full 100 minutes.

30 – It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)

Breaking records

Breaking records

When i started watching this film i thought for the first 30 minutes or so it should have been called it’s a shit life, but as the film went on it picked up and had a few comical bits where i was LOL’ing.James Stewart plays a guy running a savings and loan in a small town. He’s on a bridge and just about to end it all but he says a little prayer to “God” and low and behold an angel comes down to help him see the light and all that rubbish. There’s a strange bit with the angels talking, where they’re represented by stars and galaxies. As i watched the film i started to think there wasn’t enough good bits for me to warrent it being on the list. There was some really bad camera stuff, jumping around and coming out of focus, the quality seemed to go from crystal clear in some shots to blurry as fuck in others.I’d say this is due to the exterior stuff and studio stuff.Either way these things got my goat up.This is a Christmas movie too and it’s regularly on t.v. around then, but i wouldn’t watch it.Depressing watching a guy waste his life and not follow his dream he had since he was young, then he try and kill himself. Eek

35 – American History X (1998)

You want ketchup on that ?

I remember Barrett saying that American History X was one of his favourite films but i never rated it,i wrote it off as one of them films that uses too much graphic violence.Like them rubbish fottie gang movies that were being churned out in there dozens in the 90’s.Not my bag really.I was shocked to see it on the list never mind in the top 40.Shocked.The film is about a young teenage skinhead and his last 24 hours before he is killed by a black dude. There’s a load of flashbacks throughout that show how he and his brother came to be filled with so much hatred.Ah,the films not all gloom and doom.Dannys older brother Darryl sees the error of his ways while inside and comes out a new man and tries to get his brother away from the Nazi group.which he does. But it’s short lived.Norton got an Oscar nod for this and fair dues to him,it’s a good performance.I did notice The Clockwork Orange reference with Danny and his principle, the “what’s it going to be” line. It’s used numerous times in Burgess novel and it’s more or less that same scenario here. It’s an ultimatum.I don’t like the overall look of the film for some reason. There’s something not quite right about some of the black and white stuff.

41 – North by Northwest (1959)

Heil Hitler.

Heil Hitler.

Gregory Peck stars in another of Hitchcock films here.In this one he’s mistaken for a fictitious character made by the CIA or FBI to catch a crook selling american secrets to the soviets. He’s ducking and diving trying to avoid the cops after he’s implemented in a murder at the  U.N.But it’s not all bad.In his travels he meets a horned up blonde on the overnight train. She’s made for it.There’s quite a bit of vocal foreplay here and in the end i think he scores. If you look at Peck when he kisses or holds a woman he doesn’t know what to do with his hands. He looks like he’s just after washing them and there’s no towels. There’s a scene at 1 hour 41 minutes where a gun goes off,but they must have done a few takes because before the gun fires an extra,a kid,in the background puts his fingers in his ears to dampen the sound.I wouldn’t have noticed if the little fuckers wasn’t looking over his shoulder so many times and looking directly at the camera.Later on in the film, near the end,h e bumps into another horned up blonde.Lucky bugger. But this time he’s in a rush so he just brushes her off. It’s not a bad film as a hole but there are a couple of scenes that weren’t needed. For example when Peck meets the blonde after he’s been shot with blanks she asks if he’s okay after being shot by blanks by her.Christ obviously, and  we guessed they were blanks after he got afterwards you don’t need to spoon feed up.The last 5 minutes of the film has so many flaws it’s a joke but i’ll just leave this review at that.

47 – Vertigo (1958)

Man i'm so baked...

Man i’m so baked…

Vertigo is a weird one.At first it’s some sort of supernatural detective yarn but 40 minutes from the end it jumps to the classic Hitchcock murder-mystery perfect crime Plot.Stewart plays a San Francisco detective who,in the course of a rooftop chase, witnesses another cop fall to his death. It’s this scare that leads to him developing vertigo. As he’s can’t go near any high places he quits the force indefinitely.Just as he quits he gets a call from an old college friend who wants him to investigate his wife. Now here’s where shit goes well and truly bizarre. As strange as the plot went i had to take it all in as-is,but i was left thinking that it was Hitchcocks style. But as the story went on,and on,it was all a big hoax. I’m telling you this because i wouldn’t bother recommending this film. There was 2 or 3 good bits where they went a bit crazy with the visuals. One bit was animated like a cartoon and another seemed like an acid trip.I think it was this acid trip that put Stewarts character in hospital for some months.

57 – Double Indemnity (1944)

Double indemnity? More like double line spacing.

Double indemnity? More like double line spacing.

Double Indemnity or as it’s called in Mexico ‘Perdicion’ is a 1940’s film noir movie about an insurance scam where a wife bumps off her husband.I messed up while downloading this film.I went to play it and it was over dubbed in Mexican with no subtitles. So i downloaded some subs and the third ones were in sync. For Double Indemnity the subs were really fast with there being often 3-5 lines of text. The main character is an insurance salesman who works for a big firm. One day while he’s calling to the house of a client to renew their car insurance he encounters his young wife who has ideas of killing the husband. He says take a run and jump, but a few hours later when she calls to his house and he gets the ride then he’s all in.Manipulated or what? They formulate a pretty good plan for killing him and have some solid alibis. The plan goes off without a hitch and it all looks good. But as usual that’s not for long. The film is told as a flashback that only catches up to present time in the last 5 minutes, which i wasn’t expecting. I’m not sure if it’s a good version because of the dubbed/subtitled thing i watched was too taxing on the brain.
