Falling asleep in the Poppy field,a little opium reference here

The Wizard of Oz is about a girl who gets a concussion when a window hits her on the head and trips out and has a crazy dream.A dream that lasts about an hour and a half long and seems to contain about a dozen songs.I think i said before that i disliked musicals but i’ll make an exception for this one and say that i fucking hate musicals.Songs aside for a second, the plot is pretty original and has spawned 2 or 3 spin offs (The Wiz for one).Visually it looks really good, the colours, large set pieces and well painted and enhanced back drops. There’s also a massive cast:the munchkins, flying apes, guards and a few other bucks. This is one for the kids, turn it on,give them a bowl of corn flakes and then fuck off for 1 hour 41 minutes.

148 – Casino (1995)

Al Pacino is great in this

Al Pacino is great in this

This is third film on the trot to have a voice over narrative. While it works for some films(Trainspotting) and doesn’t for others(Kill Bill Vol 1) i think casino could have done without it,or maybe just less of it.It felt like it was an additional feature on a dvd at one point. The films not too bad,Scorsese knows what he’s at.There was few scenes that i did have beef with.Namely the car explosion scene. In the beginning we clearly see De Nero (a mannequin) explode in the car and the hood goes flying up about 15 feet. Then later on it shows a different shot and then another one. That peeved me off.Casino is about some Italian gangsters from Kansas who move to vegas to manage a casino as he’s knows his shit about betting.More riff raff from Kansas moves to Vegas,Joe Pesci, and he’s a loose cannon and not a very likable character.I won’t spoil it but he does get his comeuppance in the end.

The second Danny Boyle film on the list. Now this is how you make a film.Danny Boyle is everything Tarantino isn’t – a good film maker.Trainspotting is pretty much bang on.I can’t fault it.There’s some amazing shots and a few where i was asking myself how he did it.One for example where it seems like the camera is inside the needle and the heroin goes into Rents arm.If you haven’t seen Trainspotting then i’ll give you the synopsis. Its about 4 friends living in Scotland and revolves around them and heroin.A descent soundtrack that’s not to heavy.Ewan McGregar is great in this.I noticed the two girls from Intermission were in this too.

150 – Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)

pure shit

pure shit

Where do i begin with the monstrosity of a film?Lets me think.Taratino is one selfish director making a film compleatly for himself,i know that sounds a bit weird but listen to this. When you watch  a good film you should be able to make up your own mind and come to your own conclusions but what Tarantino does is spoon feed you so that you have to think what he forces you to think. He does this throughout the film with title screens and a voice over narrative that you shouldn’t even need if you can tell the story with the imagery. And the music, fuck me,the music,i felt like i had accidentily switched over to MTV at various stages in the film.I counted the songs at the credits and it was 31 songs. If you make a good film you shouldn’t have to pepper it with songs to rouse the viewer. One more thing,if you’re going to make a film just make a film, have a plot, good actors and the rest, don’t fill it full of all this unessessary crap like bleeping words out or switching between black and white all the time.Too much added shit like this spoiled this film. And yeah Tarantino we got the Pulp Fiction reference.

151 – Warrior (2011)

is that the same buck from terminator 4?

is that the same buck from terminator 4?

There’s been quite a few fight films on the list so far;Rocky , The Wrestler and i think one more but this is by far the best fight movie I’ve ever seen.It pretty much has it all,the troubled fighter, the under dog and a few other bits and pieces.Warrior follows journey of two estranged brothers who compete in a winner takes all mixed martial arts competition. Both with different reasons for competing. One brother is doing it out of necessity as he’s lost his job and the bank is going to take the house. The other is doing it out of obligation because his ‘brother’ he served with in Iraq was killed and he wants to give the money to his widow and two kids.Nick Nolte stars as their dad,a stellar performance, who was an alcoholic and cause the brothers to be separated when they were 16.Tom Hardy does an excellent portrayal of a man full of hate.Good casting.Heart wrenching stuff. The only one thing i would change in the film would be the montage half was through,i’d cut about 2 minutes out of it.

152 – Annie Hall (1977)

Here we have a classic Woody Allen film.In my teens i hated Allen and his neurotic personality but now i don’t mind him that much.He reminds me of Groucho Marx in this film for some reason.Maybe it’s all the one liners.Anyway the film focuses on relationships and this film chronicles the whole life cycle of his with Annie Hall. From the first encounter straight through to the highs and lows and ultimately the break up and dissolvement of the relationship. TherEs a few cameos in here too;a young Jeff Goldblum and Chistopher Walken and even Paul Simon.

The best scene the whole film, scene three when Ingred is driving wasted.Hill-air-o-ous.The rest of the film is SHIT.It has a beginning no middle and not even any end. It’s bad.Bad bad bad,Do not go see this film.Hitchcock this is poor. There is one or two amazing shots in this but you have to work for them.
